Selecting the Correct Lampshade

Selecting the Correct Lampshade

Choosing the right lampshade is just as important as choosing the right lamp. A shade that is too small, too large or doesn’t match the lamp can make it look bad.

Lampshades come in three basic types:

Pendant – Also known as a drop-down shade, it hangs from above the bulb and is attached to a chain or wire bracket so that it can be raised up when not needed.

Table – This type of lamp shade sits on top of a lamp base and has a flat circular shape. It may have a ring around it with cutouts that allow light to shine through.

Sculptural – These shades are made from metal or plastic and have no opening at all, so they block out all light. They are often used on table lamps with multiple bulbs because they provide even lighting across the entire surface.

The first thing you should do when shopping for a new lampshade is to make sure that it fits your lamp. This sounds obvious, but many people forget about this step and end up with a shade that doesn’t fit at all.

The easiest way to find out if a shade will fit is to measure your old one and compare it to what’s available in stores. If they’re different sizes, then you’ll have to decide whether you want something that fits or something that looks good on its own merits. In most cases, though, you’ll be able to find something that fits perfectly if you take the time to look around.

The next step is deciding what material you want your new shade made out of. You can choose from silk or cotton shades, which are both soft and easy on the eyes; plastic shades; metal shades; or even glass shades which give off an elegant glow but aren’t very practical because they get dirty easily and are often hard to clean properly.

The colour and pattern of your lampshade can help you decide on what design would work best in your home. Some people prefer simple white shades while others like bold patterns or even floral designs. If you’re selecting an opaque fabric, then there are many different choices available including satin or silk materials that may feel more luxurious than typical fabrics used in lampshades today. If you’re selecting a translucent material such as glass or metal, then make sure that it complements other items within your room decor so that everything looks cohesive together rather than mismatched.
