How To Prepare For Sleep
When getting ready for sleep, it is highly recommended that you dim the lights in your home about an hour before sleep time. This will help your body and mind to relax.
You should also only do relaxing activities away from the bedroom so that you can wind down from your day.
It is best to avoid looking at any gadgets or screens, so you should put away your smart phone, laptop, tablet etc. You should also take off the television since the light from these screens will prevent you from feeling sleepy.
Once it is 10 minutes before sleep time, you should do a mindfulness exercise. To start, simply sit in a chair and make sure that the light in the room is dim. Close your eyes and think about the outline of your body and then trace around this outline within your mind. You should be aware of your feelings in this process and take note where you feel more or less pressure. It is best to start outlining your head and check to see if it feels heavy or not. Then, move along your ears, cheek, shoulder, torso, leg etc. This exercise should take about 5 minutes. If you find your mind is going off track, simply regain your focus and don’t get upset or judge yourself since your mind will likely wander.
Then, once complete, you can go in your bed and relax and focus on your breathing. This should help you to sleep, however, if you don’t then you should get up and sit in a chair and do the exercise again until you’re sleepy.
