1) Create a (Hair) Support System
Surrounding yourself with like-minded people when it comes to your hair can really help you to learn to love it. Find yourself a group of women who love (or are learning to love) their natural hair. It could be a circle of friends, a Pinterest group page or other Social Media groups. These support systems allow you to swap tips, ask advice and learn to accept your natural black hair.
2) Accept that this is your natural hair texture
This is often easier said than done but it is the most important step in the process of learning to love your natural hair. Trying to turn your hair into something it isn’t, takes time and effort, it is easier to learn to accept the text of your hair and embrace the gorgeous coils you have. Spend your energy on celebrating and showing your natural coils off.
A part of this step is understanding your hair type. Once you know what type of hair you have, you can learn how to properly care for it. This makes learning to love it easier because you aren’t trying to turn it into something it is not but rather embracing everything it is.
You may also want to ditch all the chemicals and accessories you are using to try to turn your hair into something it is. Let it just be natural and start falling in love with our curls, whatever type you have.
3) Create a Pinterest Inspiration board
Pinterest can solve just about any problem, even learning how to love your hair. Creating an inspiration board will help you to see how you can style, cut or treat your hair. This can help inspire you to try out new things with your natural black hair but also creates a visually appealing board that will show you just how amazing your hair can look if you let it do what it is designed to do.
Creating Pinterest boards will also encourage you to try out new looks. Find looks that work for your face shape and push yourself to try out something new. You can also find styles that make use of accessories like barrettes, bows or bobby pins.
4) Say nice things about your black natural hair
If you are constantly looking in the mirror and saying negative things about your hair you will constantly feel uncomfortable. Instead of this negative self-talk, change the dialogue to more positive affirmations. Focus on the positives when it comes to your hair. Start off saying just one positive thing per day. If you are struggling, sit down and make a list of things you love about your hair and focus on them each time you are having a down hair day.
Ditch words with negative connotations like damaged, crunchy, nappy and replace them with more positive words like unique, kinky or curly.
5) Don’t be so harsh on yourself
It is so important to be kind to yourself, even if you are having a bad hair day. Some days you will look in the mirror at the unmanageable for and feel despondent, that’s ok. Just remember to keep trying to change the narrative to a more positive, uplifting one. Go back to your Pinterest board for a little inspiration on how to wear your “unmanageable fro” and love it! The journey to love your natural black hair and self-love are one and the same. You can’t truly love yourself if you are constantly trying to change your hair.
These 5 tips sound easy but they can be difficult to implement, especially in the beginning. If you keep trying to focus on the advantages of your natural black hair, you will quickly fall madly, deeply in love with your hair. Ignore the haters, focus on why your curls make you even more awesome and walk around proudly with your natural locks
