Vacation time signals a time to relax and unwind for many people, whether their destination is a tropical beach, a remote mountain cabin or somewhere in between. However, failing to plan and pack appropriately can lead to more stress and headaches while taking the trip, which defeats the whole purpose of going on vacation. Here are four items to pack before going on vacation.
Table of Contents
Important Documents
If you plan on driving or flying domestically, you will probably only need your driver’s license or state identification card that you carry with you on a daily basis. However, international travel requires a bit more forethought in terms of obtaining the proper documents for travel. If you do not currently have a valid, unexpired passport book, make sure to apply for one before your trip. Keep in mind that passport processing times can range from a few weeks to even months, so plan ahead accordingly.
It is also essential that you have access to funds while traveling. If you are going out of the country, call your bank to make sure you can use your credit or debit card in your destination country, and let the bank know the dates you will be traveling. Otherwise, the bank may freeze your card due to suspicious activity.
Medications
If you take any prescription medication, make sure not to leave those behind, as acquiring new ones may be difficult or impossible to do while traveling. If you are traveling to another country, make sure that the prescription you bring is allowed there.
Packing any over-the-counter medication is also a good idea, as this allows you to have what you need on hand at all times, whether you are going on a Greece cruise or a drive across North America. If you become ill or injured while traveling, the last thing you want to think about is finding a store that carries what you need. As with prescriptions, keep in mind that just because something is sold over the counter in the United States, it does not necessarily mean that another country permits people to carry that product freely.
Electronic Devices
Most people consider their mobile phones to be essential items that they bring with them wherever they go. If you are going to be a passenger on a long flight or car ride, you might also consider bringing a tablet so that you can pass the time watching movies or television shows. Although vacation time is generally a time to leave work behind, some people may prefer to have their laptops with them in case something at work comes up that they need to take care of remotely.
Whatever electronic devices you decide to bring on your trip, make sure to pack their associated chargers as well. In addition, keep in mind that you may have to purchase an adapter when traveling abroad, as the outlets available may look different than the ones you use at home. Most importantly, remember to turn off your electronics whenever you can to better enjoy your vacation.
Clothing
In order to be comfortable on your voyage, you will need to pack clothing that is appropriate for the weather where you will be going. Relaxed pants like leggings are nice to wear during long drives, and since some people find that planes can get cold, consider bringing an extra hoodie or sweatshirt if you are traveling by air.
When choosing what to pack, check out the weather forecast at your destination. This helps you to avoid packing items of clothing that you will not end up wearing because they are either too warm or too cold. You can always buy a souvenir t-shirt or sweatshirt at your destination if needed.
Save travel headaches down the road by being prepared and having what you need ahead of time. Remember to pack these four items before hitting the road, and have fun!
