Bikini waxing is becoming an increasing norm for women. Whether it’s a standard bikini wax or a full Brazilian, women are piling in salons for their 15 to 30 minutes of pain.

The Brazilian wax was introduced in none of than New York City in 1987 by seven Brazilian sisters, every since the treatment has become a popular hair removal method for women in America.

A few years back, Oprah featured her very first bikini wax on her popular daytime show. Supermodel Naomi Campbell accompanied the ‘talk show queen’ taking Oprah to her favorite hair removal salon.

Last year, ‘The View’s’ Sherri Shepherd aired her first bikini wax live on the ABC show. The host braves the scorching pain of a full Brazilian in between hilarious screams and winching–a familiar feeling for any woman who has endured the treatment.

But are bikini waxes becoming a necessity? Remember the scene in ‘Sex and The City’ the original film version, when Samantha blasted Miranda for her excess hair under there? The hilarious exchange between the fictional characters propelled a larger conversation on the in demand service.

So what do you say? Have you ever had a bikini wax? Do you think the treatment is a necessity or a luxury?

I think all of this fuss regarding the hair down there is ridiculous. Whoever said we had to be “naked as the day we were born” down there I personally find it a bit creepy; I don’t want my husband to think he’s having sex with a pre-adolescent girl.

I worked at a salon once, & I was pretty much tricked into getting a Brazilian. It was right after I got married & the waxer said that it would be “a nice little surprise” for my husband. THE WORST PAIN OF MY LIFE. People across the salon could hear my screams behind closed doors. What was worse is that she did it several days before my period, & everyone knows that the pain is much more intense during that time (something to do with the hormones). Because I was writhing in so much pain — & basically begging her to stop — the waxing job was botched, & I had wax stuck in my crotch for about a week.

Never again will I succumb to that kind of materialistic peer pressure.

I believe it keeping it nice & tidy down there. Neatly trimmed & groomed with care. But scalding hot wax so close to my lady bits? Fuck that.

This topic was all the rage on twitter not too long ago. The waxers were appalled at anyone who shaved. I didn’t know it was that deep. Just keep it neat and clean…

Unless it’s going to kill me, it’s not a necessity.

I have never had a brazilian and I don’t care to. It seems the fetish is now the norm and the norm the fetish.

It’s my preference to trim neatly.

Necessary and I would never do without them.

I’ve always worn (tasteful) dance outfits and costumes that tend to show things, so I’ve been getting waxed since I was 13.

I don’t want to look like an 8 year old down there so I keep a “landing strip” of sorts, but I don’t like the look or feel of an enchanted forest and keep everything else smoooooooth!

Weather it is a necessity or luxury depends on the woman. some women prefer different things like men…shrugs… Personally, for me it is just apart of my grooming process. But I do a combination of going to get it done and doing some of the upkeep myself until I have to go again but my preference is to have a little strip of hair down there and not looking like a little child but to me waxing is easier to many ingrown hairs and irritation with razors for

I agree with Binky. It depends on the woman whether it is a necessity or luxury. Personally, I prefer waxes because it lasts longer, and I like the results a lot better. Luckily, I’ve good experiences, and found a great spa that does a really good waxes, and provides a relaxing environment to help distract me from the wax. It also helps that I haven’t had any bad experiences with getting burns or anything from the waxes, which is why I definitely prefer having my waxes. However, especially with today’s economy, getting a wax can be another expense added to our grooming process. So it really depends.

for me it would be a luxury.. it doesn’t have to be done.. i’ll live if it’s not.. believe it or not i use the sally hansen hair removal creme baby lotion and it left me feeling super smooth.. i didn’t put it in my crack but i do like the landing strip @ one poster put it.. the purpose of the hair is to prevent friction..

  9. Ev`Yan – that salon FAILED you. Every spa I’ve ever been to makes it clear that you should not get you bikini line waxed the week before or of your period. But don’t let that bad experience turn you off for life. Just ask for blue wax on your bikini line (as opposed to the strips they use on your legs), it’s softer and much less painful.

Mandatory…no, but nothing wrong with some grooming. I prefer wax to shaving. One I dont have to do it as often and less ingrowns, etc. It’s uncomfortable, but once I pop a couple of pain relievers beforehand, it’s more tolerable.

waxing definitely isn’t a necessity. i say, just don’t look like chewbacca down there!

I did my first Brazilian wax in the spring. I had it done with hard wax and yes it was a little uncomfortable but It was the best thing I ever did. I love it! I try to get one every six weeks. So yes, its a necessity for me!

My boyfriend loves it too. :)
